February 1999Very good work was done to repair, stabilize, and improve sections of the Lake Trail. Also three trails that led to the Lake Trail were closed and rerouted due to poor design and erosion. Thank you to the following mountain bikers that gave their time and effort to this trail work. NEW TRAIL SYSTEM PLANNING TEAM MEMBER Cheryl Stevens has taken the responsibility to join the Adaptive Management TSPT as a mountain bike representative. Thanks to Cheryl and Jane Barker for their recent addition and contribution to this process.
THE YEAR IN REVIEW After a slow start during the first six months of GCMBC existence, club members can now look favorably at the evolution of club activities and contributions made toward the Clemson Forest trail system. The club continues to gain support through membership and now has 50 active members. Thanks to all those supporting this effort. Also a thank you to the club members that are serving on the TSPT and the time and effort they are contributing to represent mountain bikers voice concerning trail issues. We should all look to contribute more in 1999 and to see positive developments with trail use.

March 1999The GCMBC held its general membership meeting on February 25th 1999. Meeting minutes are available on the web page. Reelected for 1999 were Ian Davidson-Chairman, Craig Walters-Vice Chairman, and Josh Schaffer-University Student Representative. Elected to positions for 1999 were Chad Lane-University Cycling Team Representative, Jason Schumacher-Local Representative, Todd Thompson-Local Representative, and Heather Kline Schaffer-Local Representative. The GCMBC Board of Directors met on Sunday February 28th 1999 to discuss issues and to assign responsibilities. Although there are many important issues, the primary direction of the board members will be to enhance a concerted effort to spread the word concerning the value of the Clemson Forest, the privilege of using the trail system, and supporting the Adaptive Management process through club membership. Board members will develop an on going relationship with state wide bike shops to promote club ideals. Craig, Josh, and Chad will develop and implement a plan to recruit university students to join and to support the club. Jason will lead the effort to meet with Jr. High and High School students. Other misc responsibilities, Josh and Heather will assist with the newsletter, and Todd will organize the next workday. Club members are encouraged to contact board members if you are interested in being more involved with administration of club functions, serve on a committee, or to make suggestions for trail work projects.
University Trail Use Surveys- Keep a watch for trail use surveys placed on your car. Complete a survey every time that one is placed on your car, it measures trail use for that particular day. These surveys will continue primarily on the weekend for months to come. The university complimented the mountain bikers at the recent adaptive management meeting saying that we were giving them good response. Thank you for your time and effort.

May 1999TRAIL WORKDAY AND SOCIAL Saturday, May 8th 10:00 A.M. Meet and begin work of Rerouting Chain Breaker Trail. (Enter Lake Road From Old Six Mile, 1 ½ miles to Chain Breaker Trail head). Thanks to Todd Thompson for leading this workday. 12:30 P.M. Cookout at Wildcat Creek. $5.00 per person to cover expenses. Jane Barkers brother Marion will be Grilling chicken. June 1999 The GCMBC will conduct a meeting at the Clemson-Central Library, Highway 93 on Thursday June 3rd at 8:00p.m. Your attendance is important. After the meeting we are planning to stop by Los Amigos for food and drink. Looking forward to the evening, hope you can attend. TRAIL WORKDAY AND PICNIC On Saturday May 8th we worked on the Chain Breaker Trail. The chain breaker trail was closed due to erosion. The lower section between Lake Road and Dalton Road has been closed but with plans for a reroute in the near future. The upper section between Dalton Road and the field area was closed and has been rerouted. The reroute adds a nice section of trail. Try it out if you haven't already. Rusty Mitchel made the suggestion that chain breaker be rerouted. Todd Thompson was the leader for this reroute project. Thank you to these two for their efforts.
