The lower section between Lake Road and Dalton Road has been closed but with plans for a reroute in the near future. The upper section between Dalton Road and the field area was closed and has been rerouted. The reroute adds a nice section of trail. Try it out if you haven't already. Rusty Mitchel made the suggestion that chain breaker be rerouted. Todd Thompson was the leader for this reroute project. Thank you to these two for their efforts. Thank you to the following who gave their time and effort at the trail workday: Todd Thompson, Scott Snape, Craig Walters, Gloria Holladay, Bob Bolick, Michael McAleer, Ian Davidson, Kevin Kinley, Craig Kinley, Jimmy Benfield, Rusty Mitchel, Matt Morgan, Larry Lyles, and Nathon.

TRAIL MAINTENANCE

Thank you to Amy Wilcox, Craig Walters, and Ian Davidson as they have done much needed maintenance work on the Waterfall Trails, Hunting Arrow Trail, Clear-cut Trial and Double Fork Tree Trail, pruning limbs, small trees, and trimming high grass. These trails are in very good condition thanks to their extra effort. Additional work on other trails is needed. Please contact a board member and volunteer an hour of your time.

SAFETY CONCERNS

Automobile drivers are concerned about Mountain Bikers congregating in the road before and or after a trail ride, particularly at the Issaqueena Parking Area on Old Six Mile Road and Dam Road. Please help alleviate this dangerous and annoying situation by parking well off the road and staying out of the road while straddling your bike or circling on your bike. At least move out of the entire road well in advance of on coming cars. Please encourage others to establish safer habits. Thank you.

TUESDAY NIGHT RIDE

The Tuesday night ride has been going on for two years. Jason Schumacher leads a group of 8-12 riders, guys and girls, on an enjoyable paced ride for 11/2 to 2 hrs. This ride begins at 6:35p.m. ish. A second group of 3-5 riders starting at 6:35p.m. sharp rides at a very hard to extremely hard pace for 11/2hrs. Open invitation to join these rides. September GCMBC Meeting

The GCMBC met September 2nd and reviewed the following reports: Treasurer, Membership, Adaptive Management, Student Membership, October Workday, December Social Events, Women’s Events, and other miscellaneous topics. The highlight of the meeting was the report on Women’s events by Amy Wilcox. Amy reflects on her and Carmen’s experiences while mountain biking with the guys. (See below)

Hello my name is Amy Wilcox

Some of you may know me as the female who is often seen with the vicious German Shepard. Who unlike myself is usually sucking wind. (But, trust me she loves it.) After being here for a year and a half. I have finally starting riding in the Tuesday night ride. For a while I was intimated with riding with a big group. It seemed like either me or my dog could not keep up.

I tip my hat to Carmen and Karen, for after hearing that they were riding with the Tuesday night riders, I decided to give it a try. But after riding with the big boys for the last 2 months I have come to find they are not quite so intimidating. For instance here are a few things I have learned.

A woman can kick a guy's butt in mountain bike riding, and her name is Willow Kerber. At least that is what the guys tell me. Carmen and I appear to know more trails than Chuck and Matt. That even after Ian Davidson won his Championship that his big head would still fit through the tight trees on the trails. A woman can rack herself just like a man. Carmen has found out that clipless pedals aren't so bad. I myself have learned that bikes will not climb trees. The easiest way to make the guys quit harassing us is to begin a discussion of 'womanly issues'. Guys usually don't mind females riding with them as long as we don't complain. So we have learned to complain amongst ourselves and out of their earshot.

Speaking of complaining, I can't tell you the number of excuses we hear as to why they cannot make it up a hill or over a log. Jason leads with the "My shorts got caught on my bike." We have found that it is much easier on our bodies to ALLOW the men to lead the way. They clean out the spider webs, and if we see them bust on an obstacle, we know to avoid it. We figure that if their testosterone loaded bodies can't do it, then we don't even want to try. Which brings up this fact "Don't ever attempt THE ROCK on the lake trail".

Girls, if you do have a wild hair to try something dangerous ask the guys to stand beside the obstacle and catch you if you start to fall. It does nothing but pets their egos, and you get a good cushion for the fall. Guys, when you are trying to get your girlfriend interested in Mountain Bike Riding, don't start them out on the Lake Trail. If you need a route to take them on, please feel free to talk to Carmen and myself, and we will be glad to advise.

Biking is a great way to meet men, if you like them smelly and dirty. On the upside of this, guys don't care about what you look like. All they care about is that you are a girl on a bike. In the long run, we appreciate the men riders because we probably would never have gotten to the point where we are today.

We want to extend a special thanks to Jason Shuamacher and Michael McAleer for always riding in the back and taking care of us women when we needed it.

Trail Work Day

Sunday, October 3rd, 1:00 PM at the 2nd Entrance to Dalton Rd. We will be stabilizing the Chainbreaker reroute trail. Meet at the parking area on lake road a few minutes early. Work will begin promptly at 1 PM. Please bring tools for digging and chopping. Enter Issaqueena from Old Six Mile Rd. at the Water Tower, Go 1 3/4 mile on the Lake Rd. to the parking area adjacent to the second entrance to Dalton Rd.

OCTOBER TRAIL WORK PROJECT

On Sunday October 3rd we worked for 2 hours making improvements to the Chain Breaker Reroute Trail. The lower half of the trail was re-engineered with work that included trail stabilization, leveling of the off camber, fallen tree removal and other improvements to make the trail better. Comments from people riding this trail have been very positive concerning these improvements. Thank you to the following that gave their time and effort to this trail work: Ben Poss, Angela Eddy, Cheryl Stevens, Amy Wilcox, Ian Davidson, Carmen Talley, Dustin Ahrens, Herb Clark, Alex Frick, Rusty Mitchel, Jimmy Benfield, Eric Seaverson, Shawn Holland, Ric Cushman, and Jeff.

HUNTING SEASON AND YOUR SAFETY

Make yourself aware that hunting season in the Clemson Forest is from November 1st to January 1st. It is recommended to stay out of hunting areas during this period for your safety and respect for the hunters during their season in the woods. On Sundays there is no hunting on Clemson forest property, so that would be a good day to ride trails that are in the hunting areas. Sections of the forest that are used for hunting are posted as Wildlife Management Area, or WMA.
